After a year of forced standstill, with the borders closed due to the pandemic, the activities of EVO IOOC Italy are back here in Italy.
The 6th edition of the international contest, organized by Dr Antonio G. Lauro, opens under the sign of optimism and precaution. And the optimism dictated by the lightening of the stranglehold of COVID-19 - begins Lauro - can not and should not make us lower our attention! In fact, "precaution" is the watchword that circulates among the organizing group which, I remind you, this year will take place with all the necessary precautions, strongly limiting contact with the outside world even during the award ceremony.
It is still a festival here in Palmi - continues Lauro - where the absolute protagonist will be only the extra virgin olive oil in its various forms: from the EVOO to variously flavored condiments.
The judges, who this year come almost exclusively from Europe (Canada, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain), are traveling - concludes Dr. Lauro - and will begin on Sunday, May 16 the activities related to the competition. Everyone has a great desire to work and share this event that, I remember, will be in presence and not on-line as last year.
Now some data.
From the statements of the organization we discover that there will be about 650 EVOOs and condiments in the competition this year, with an increase of more than 30% compared to 2020. The desire and curiosity to find out how many of these will receive the coveted trophy is great.
These are excellent olive oil producers from 36 countries, including Italy, Greece, Spain, France, Portugal, Malta, Croatia, Slovenia, Cyprus, Turkey, Tunisia, Israel, Japan, United States, Algeria, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco and Saudi Arabia, for the northern hemisphere and Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, Chile and Peru for the southern hemisphere.
To know the results of the selections will have to wait until Saturday, May 22, when the gold and silver medals awarded by the competition will be revealed. While the awards ceremony, which will crown the best EVOO and condiments (Best in Class) will take place in Palmi on May 28, 2021 at 5:00 pm live in Piazza Primo Maggio and Facebook live on the page of EVO IOOC Italy and on Channel 18 of the Digital Terrestrial Calabria.
